SDMC Elections

Nominations for our 2016-2017 SDMC (Shared Decision Making Committee) have been submitted.  The following candidates have been nominated for this principal advisory committee.   We are seeking one magnet parent and one neighborhood parent.

Andy Aston

Andy Aston is father to two daughters at ROE.  He is keenly involved and interested in his children’s education and building supporting learning communities.  Andy has experience of IB schools globally having lived in Australia and Singapore prior to Houston.  He is a strong advocate of the IB program and the holistic learning opportunities it provides. As Senior Vice President of Turner and Townsend in Houston, he has extensive business experience and has previously served in a voluntary capacity on the Indigenous engagement committee in Australia.  As testament to this philosophy of giving back to the community, the Aston family have provided temporary foster care for children in Singapore.

Susana Boker- Magnet Representative

Susana Boker has a B.S. in Industrial Engineering and earned an MBA from Rice University.   She has spent more of her career life in Finance and Strategy.  While working for the BMW Group she was responsible for launching the MINI Cooper business line, managed the day to day operations for the brand, and developed its long term plan.  Susana was also a member of the Executive Board of BMW Mexico.  Previously, as the controller at BMW, she developed and managed the company’s yearly budget.  After joining Exterran Holdings, Susana was responsible for developing the 10-year strategic plan.  She has also evaluated and recommended numerous capital expenditure projects.

Susana has a son who is a magnet student at ROE and will be attending second grade in school year 2016-17.  Susana is very impressed and thankful for the education her son is receiving at ROE and would like to contribute through the SDMC to the further development of this great school.

Molly Hale  – Magnet Representative

I was a teacher in HISD from 2003-2008.  My last four years I was on the River Oaks campus as the Special Education Chairperson and one of the campus Dyslexia Specialists.  I served on the Shared Decision Making Committee all four years at ROE.  My last two years at River Oaks, I served on the administration team and as one of the campus test coordinators.

I have an undergraduate degree in Interdisciplinary Studies and a Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction with a focus on Administration course work.  I believe my previous teaching experience and educational background will be beneficial when collaborating with faculty on the School Improvement Plan, budgeting, staffing, curriculum, and other areas addressed by this committee.  I have served on the committee from 2014-2016.  I would like to continue serving on this committee as a magnet representative.

Alexandra M.  (Sasha) Van Nes – Magnet Representative

My name is Sasha Van Nes, and I would like to serve on the Shared Decision Making Committee.  I am a magnet parent of Henry Smith, who is currently completing kindergarten.  I am a native Houstonian, educated by HISD (Bellaire High School), and a graduate of Cornell College.  I also have extensive graduate level course work and experience in non-profit management.  I currently work as a realtor with Greenwood King.

Food and drinks, including beer and wine, will be available for purchase. Children are welcome to attend.  More information about this event will be coming your way in the next few days.

Developing our sense of community is an important part of the work of the PTO, we encourage you to check our website throughout the year for more information about Movie Night (October 2nd), Fun Run (October 24th), and ROE Family Carnival (April 24th), as well as the Earth Day Celebration in the Spring!

School Supplies

If you have not yet purchased your school supplies for next year, there is still time.  You may order them here: https://cwsclients.wufoo.com/forms/river-oaks-elementary-school-supply-order-form/ or at Roadrunner Rally.  All school supplies will be delivered to the classrooms before the first day of school. Please note that the Kindergarten school supplies includes the Kinder Field Trip t-shirt (green/white tie dye) and Kindergarten Graduation caps (May event).

 Email and Directory Procedures

Last year, ROE rolled out its new email and directory platform, My School Anywhere.  In addition to offering a print directory, this platform offers a secure, online directory in addition to a mobile app.  Even if you input your family’s information last year – you will need log in again this year to confirm your information.  If you are a returning family who had information in the 2014-2015 Directory, you should have received an email with a link to update your information.  If you have not received this email, please contact directory@riveroakspto.org.

If you are a new family, or did not have any information in the 2014-2015 Directory, click the following link to enter your information: http://bit.ly/ROENewStudent.

 Ways to Volunteer

There are a wide variety of ways to get involved: from helping to plan parties and events, to entering data on your computer or updating the website; from selling ads to writing thank you notes;  from drafting blurbs for the ROE News to helping our Finance or Development team; from taking pictures to working in the Nature Center.  Whatever your skills, we have a place for you!  Stop by the Volunteer booth at the Roadrunner Rally or contact our Volunteer Coordinators at volunteers@riveroakspto.org and let them know where your skills can help the PTO.

Per the PTO Bylaws, one Kindergarten Representative was elected to the Board in May. Liz Daniel has single-handedly put together the back to school play date and communicated with incoming Kindergarten families. But, as our Grade Representatives are shared positions, she needs some help! If you have an incoming Kindergartner this year, and would like to serve with Liz as the Kindergarten Grade Representative, please let me know by August 30th (president@riveroakspto.org).

As required by HISD, all volunteers must be registered through the HISD VIPS process.  For more information, visit http://www.houstonisd.org/vips. To begin the registration process, visit www.houstonisd.org/vipslogin.

Other Ways to Support ROE and the PTO

The PTO pays for teacher training, field trips, the IB annual fee, student enrichment opportunities, security officers, and teacher appreciation. We depend on parent contributions as well as local business contributions to meet our budget.  In addition to the Annual Fund, we have a Fall Online Auction, two Book Fairs, an Affinity Program and have numerous sponsorship opportunities.  Watch for emails and flyers from our Development Committee to learn more about how ways to give and support the school!

The ROE PTO is looking forward to a great 2015-2016 school year!  Please feel free to email me at president@riveroakspto.org if you would like to learn more about PTO or have any questions.

Sincerely,

Chiarra Stratton
2015-2016 ROE PTO President

ROE Alumni Website

Did you know that there is a River Oaks Elementary alumni website?   You can find the link to the Alumni website under Useful School Links in our sidebar.   If you have not visited the site recently, note that there is a lot of new content that has recently been added to it.  In the past, the emphasis has been on the 1960s and earlier.  Now, the alumni website includes more than 1,000 photos from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s, including class photos, photos from all of kinds of school activities, and photos of teachers and other staff members.   There is also an ROE Alumni Facebook group, and you can find the link to the Facebook group on the ROE Alumni website.  Even if you are not yet an alumnus but are a current family at ROE, you may find it interesting to learn about our school’s past and the ROE legacy.
