ROE Movie Night
At this year’s Family Movie Night, we will be showing “Finding Nemo.” Dive into this delightful journey to self-discovery for a risk-taking clownfish and his nervous dad, both of whom learn that no fish swims alone.
Ballots for the Kindergarten Representative election have been sent home! Please vote for one candidate by circling their name on your original ballot. Completed ballots can be returned to school with your child or placed in the ballot box located in the front office. Ballots are due by 4pm on Wednesday, September 11. The elected representative will serve with Jacqualin Seely, who was slated last spring with the rest of the PTO Board. Candidates are:
Helen Chang - I Love to interact with kids and I was a teacher (teaching Chinese) for the toddler and kinder class during weekend. I like to achieve tasks with highest efficiency if possible. Love to learn new things and learn them quickly. I like to make new friends, making my friends happy. I like to involve kids in physical activity with green earth in mind. I also try to minimize waste and recycle as much as I can.
ReBecca Dominguez - Former elementary teacher/administrator now a stay at home mom of four that loves to spend time with family and volunteer. Active in various civic groups and at SJD parish.
Nichole Pruitt - retired from Society for the Performing Arts (SPA) in 2011, where she had been the Director of Education since 2001, to take care of her daughter Phoebe. Prior to SPA, she served as an event coordinator/account executive in the sales and marketing division at the George R. Brown Convention Center for the City of Houston. Nichole also worked as program coordinator for Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston. Nichole is a graduate of the University of Houston where she received her Masters of Education in curriculum and instruction and her B.A. in art history with a minor in history. Nichole has written critical reviews of local art exhibitions published inArtsHouston magazine. For the past nine years she has been appointed Art Judge for Harris County Department of Education’s Regional Scholastic Art and Writing Contest. Nichole currently serves on the Board of the Education Foundation of Harris County, Board of Directors for Society for the Performing Arts, and as a Docent at Bayou Bend Collection and Gardens, MFAH.
Susannah Watt - Susannah Watt is a kindergarten mom brand new to ROE. Her son Finley is in Mr. Ponder’s class, and Susannah is very excited to become involved in the ROE community. While Finley was at St. Luke’s Day School, Susannah was a room parent and served on the Parent Advisory Council for 3 years, co-chairing the Parenting Center events for one year and chairing the Day School’s awesome, four day, on-site Book Fair for two years. Susannah’s other volunteer activities over the past few years include being a library volunteer at Yellowstone Academy and being a tutor in the adult education program at SEARCH, an organization which provides services to homeless clients. She is a “recovering” attorney as well as a former Special Education teacher. Finley is Susannah and her husband Chris’ only human child, but they also have two dogs and two cats.

I hope you and your families are having a wonderful summer break and are ready for the new school year. Huge thanks go to all those parent and community donors who supported the PTO this past year. We are thankful to Compass Bank, Greenwood King and Frost Bank for sponsoring our major events, but are equally appreciative of our very generous parents. The money donated to the PTO supports the essential needs of our school. In May, the PTO Board approved a budget for the coming year of approximately $140,000. These funds will be used to pay for staff development, teacher appreciation, field trips, traffic & safety, IB annual fee, First in Math subscription, student productions/recitals, technology, community-building events, Odyssey of the Mind, and 5th grade graduation. Last year, the PTO tried a new fundraising model, replacing our gala-type auction event with an online auction, and adding an annual fund. We originally expected the online auction and the annual fund combined to make up for the lost profits from the auction event. Indeed, last year’s online auction was tremendously successful, netting over 75% of the previous year’s event. With only a soft launch of our annual fund, we were able to raise the funds we needed to cover our budget. The online auction had the added benefit of attracting a record number of bidders, as well as a record number of purchasers. Greater community participation, as well as reduced volunteer hours! This year, the auction will be online once again, and we will continue with our annual fund.
But we know a fall parent social event was missed. So, NEW THIS YEAR, on September 7, Becks Prime in Memorial Park will host a PTO social from 6:30 to 9:30pm. No tickets required, and no cover charge. Food and drinks, including beer and wine, will be available for purchase. While children are welcome to attend, parents are responsible for supervising their own children. Mark your calendars now, as this event is just around the corner! We hope you will join us in re-uniting with old friends and welcoming new friends to our community.
Fundraising is important, but the PTO also wants to continue to develop our sense of community. Plan to join us for ROE movie night on the blacktop at ROE, as well as the always-popular Fun Run. We plan to host our first ever (NEW THIS YEAR) Bingo Night this coming winter, and will of course direct the ROE Family Carnival, as well as an Earth Day celebration, in the spring.
Our volunteers are also busy at work coordinating the marquee, school supplies, school pictures, spirit store, ROE News, website, yearbook, affinity programs, and hospitality. There’s always room for more volunteers, though, and we need people with a wide range of skillsets. We have immediate needs for financial, organizational and technical skills. As required by HISD, please go to the HISD website (www.houstonisd.org/vipslogin) and complete the VIPS volunteer process application in order to serve as a parent volunteer at ROE.
Now for some back-to-school items. Don’t forget to check out our 2nd annual “Roadrunner Rally,” our one-stop PTO information station where you can purchase spirit items, pay for school supplies (if you haven’t already done so), submit information for the Directory, as well as learn how you can support the school by volunteering, participating in our affinity programs, or making financial contributions. Roadrunner Rally will be conducted during the Meet & Greet on Thursday, August 22, as well as during the back-to-school coffee after drop-off of the first day of school.

Per the PTO Bylaws, one Kindergarten Representative was elected to the Board in May. Jacqualin Seeley has worked solo to plan the summer playdates and communicate with incoming Kindergarten families. But, as our Grade Representatives are shared positions, she needs some help! Introducing 2013 – 2014 PTO Board of Directors:
As we approach Thanksgiving, the parents of our PTO have much of which to be thankful and the teachers, administrators, and students of River Oaks Elementary (“ROE”) have much of which to be proud. ROE was one of the first schools in Texas to be authorized as an International Baccalaureate (“IB”) Primary Years Program campus and is a leader in IB education. ROE has hosted numerous site visits for existing and prospective IB programs across the country. Our teachers and administrators are consulted for best instructional practices by the entire district.
