Purchase Directory Ads Until Sept. 12!

What are Spirit Ads and Business Ads?

Spirit and Business Ad sales underwrite the cost of printing directories for our school families and also raise funds for the ROE PTO that directly benefit ROE.

Spirit Ads: Families can purchase Spirit Ads in our print directory to show their school spirit or support for their children or teachers.

Your Spirit Ad can be a picture or text or both. Many people make their ad by cropping a favorite photo of their child and superimpose text by using photo editing software or Microsoft Word or PowerPoint. If you do not already have software that does this, a good suggestion is to use the free Picasa software by Google. You can download Picasa at

For more information on how to create a Spirit Ad, click the following link:  How To Make a Spirit Ad

To purchase a Spirit Ad, click: Purchase a Spirit Ad. For questions regarding Spirit Ads, email:

Business Ads: Businesses can purchase ads to promote their products or services in the print directory. Business Ads can be purchased online by clicking: Purchase a Business Ad. Premium Ad placements (tabs, back cover, and fly leaf) sell quickly so reserve your Business Ad early. For questions regarding Business Ads, contact

 Ways to Volunteer

There are a wide variety of ways to get involved: from helping to plan parties and events, to entering data on your computer or updating the website; from selling ads to writing thank you notes;  from drafting blurbs for the ROE News to helping our Finance or Development team; from taking pictures to working in the Nature Center.  Whatever your skills, we have a place for you!  Stop by the Volunteer booth at the Roadrunner Rally or contact our Volunteer Coordinators at and let them know where your skills can help the PTO.

Per the PTO Bylaws, one Kindergarten Representative was elected to the Board in May. Liz Daniel has single-handedly put together the back to school play date and communicated with incoming Kindergarten families. But, as our Grade Representatives are shared positions, she needs some help! If you have an incoming Kindergartner this year, and would like to serve with Liz as the Kindergarten Grade Representative, please let me know by August 30th (

As required by HISD, all volunteers must be registered through the HISD VIPS process.  For more information, visit To begin the registration process, visit

Other Ways to Support ROE and the PTO

The PTO pays for teacher training, field trips, the IB annual fee, student enrichment opportunities, security officers, and teacher appreciation. ROE Alumni Website

Did you know that there is a River Oaks Elementary alumni website?   You can find the link to the Alumni website under Useful School Links in our sidebar.   If you have not visited the site recently, note that there is a lot of new content that has recently been added to it.  In the past, the emphasis has been on the 1960s and earlier.  Now, the alumni website includes more than 1,000 photos from the 70s, 80s, 90s, and 2000s, including class photos, photos from all of kinds of school activities, and photos of teachers and other staff members.   There is also an ROE Alumni Facebook group, and you can find the link to the Facebook group on the ROE Alumni website.  Even if you are not yet an alumnus but are a current family at ROE, you may find it interesting to learn about our school’s past and the ROE legacy.
